Bishops tell all

Peter Lillington interviewed both Bishop Don Harvey and Bishop Ron Ferris while they were in Bedford, Texas for the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) inaugural assembly.

Bishop Don talks about gaining recognition for the ACNA as a province in the Anglican Communion, ANiC’s relationship to the Southern Cone now that we are a diocese in the ACNA, ANiC’s relationship with the Anglican Coalition in Canada (another diocese in ACNA), the perception of too many bishops in ANiC, his retirement, and the number of days he was at home from mid-January to June (10!). His vision is: “My hope is that we would continue to be Biblically faithful, and that we would be part of a family known as the Anglican Communion… to have enough of the Communion that is still Biblically faithful [so we] can be part of the family – which is what we’re praying and striving for, and that looks very promising.”

Bishop Ron discusses his episcopal ministry in BC and the church-plant he is leading in Langley, the importance of jurisdiction vs church growth and proclaiming the Word of God, the role of bishops in the ACNA, the state of affairs in the Communion and recognition of the ACNA. Asked about his vision of the ACNA, he said: “I would hope that we would have a lot of congregations that are multiplying and are using that multiplication to preach the gospel. That would be exciting for me. One of the greatest privileges of my life was signing the document with the Common Cause bishops the other day that formed the new province. So my hope would be for a multiplying Church, gathering people in North America who have been disconnected from the life of the Church. If we capture just a small portion of that vision it will be an exciting decade ahead.”

St Chad’s (Toronto) celebrates its centennial

On June 21, the congregation of St Chad’s (Toronto) celebrated 100 years of ministry, worship and fellowship – as well as a new beginning as part of the Anglican Church in North America. About 55 people attended the celebration service with the Rev Stan Fowler speaking. Following the service, the congregation enjoyed a feast prepared by members and heard messages of congratulations, greeting and encouragement sent by both individuals and churches. See photos of the celebration.

News shorts – Anglican Church in North America (ACNA)

Reactions to the launch of ACNA

Barbara Gauthier, on the Anglican Mainstream website, has compiled reactions from all sides to the launch of the new province.

The bishop of Peru, the Rt Rev Harold William Godfrey, writes of the Anglican Church in North America, “We wish you God’s blessing in the communion we share as members of the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and in our common mission of proclaiming the Gospel message of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Writing to his congregation, a Nashville pastor, the Rev Thomas McKenzie, provides a balanced report on the highs and lows of the ACNA assembly and the Church’s weaknesses and strengths. He concludes:

“The Anglican Church in North America is a family, and you are part of it. We are weak in many ways, but we have the love of God in Christ and a deep commitment to one another. We have a great future, a future of both suffering and triumph, of Cross and Resurrection. We are one Church, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, with Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. I wouldn’t have us be any other way.”

More from the inaugural provincial assembly

The Assembly website contains a number of interesting items, including:

- Video of all the main sessions, as well as interviews with Bishop John David Schofield (San Joaquin) and Archbishop Duncan

- A video of the news conference held prior to Archbishop Duncan’s installation, which including ANiC’s Cheryl Chang.

- The constitution and canons of our new province

- Reports from each day of the event

Chairman of AMiA explains his organization’s dual provincial membership

Writing to members of the Anglican Mission in the Americas (AMiA) – which accounts for nine of the dioceses in the Anglican Church in North America, Bishop Chuck Murphy explains how AMiA will remain under the Anglican Church of Rwanda. He says, “As a founding member of both the Common Cause Partnership and the emerging province, we will continue to fully participate in ACNA. As we have consistently explained, however, we remain a missionary outreach of the Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda under the authority of Archbishop Emmanuel Kolini. This allows us to enjoy dual citizenship, a similar relationship to that of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA).”

In a similar statement, Bishop Martyn Minns of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America, another ACNA diocese, states, “CANA congregations now have a ‘dual citizenship.’ They are members of the Church in Nigeria and as a result of that relationship, full members of the global Anglican Communion. CANA congregations are also members of the Anglican Church in North America and will participate fully in the life of the new province.”

Women’s ordination within ACNA

A Christianity Today article discusses differences between the dioceses of ACNA on the matter of women’s ordination and how this difference is being honoured without threatening the unity of the new province. George Conger, explaining why women are allowed to be priests but not bishops: “In the Anglican understanding, a bishop is a bishop of the whole catholic church, meaning that person should be acceptable in all places that the catholic church is… [ACNA] can live with women being at the local level of priest, because a woman priest in New York doesn’t do anything to the people in Fort Worth, Texas, who think it’s contrary to Scripture.”

An interesting Washington Times article, which states that 22 of 28 dioceses in ACNA do not ordain women, explores the views on both sides. The article says, “It’s a system known as “dual integrity,” dioceses that differ on a question where Scripture can be read both ways agree to respect and live with each other’s views.”

Church of Uganda in full communion with Anglican Church in North America

Following its June 23 meeting, the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda, issued a statement saying “ that it warmly supports the creation of the new Province in North America, the Anglican Church in North America, recognizes Bishop Bob Duncan as its new Archbishop, and declares that it is in full communion with the Anglican Church in North America” and transferred ecclesiastical oversight of the “Bishops, clergy and churches in America… to the Anglican Church in North America.” Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi said, “We have been longing to be able to repatriate our clergy and congregations to a Biblical and viable ecclesiastical structure in North America, and that day has now come. To God be the glory.”

The statement also decried the Anglican Consultative Council’s (ACC) recent refusal to seat the Church of Uganda’s duly appointed clergy delegate, Rev Phil Ashey” and “ reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to not receive funds from the Episcopal Church (TEC) and the Anglican Church of Canada, revisionist TEC and Canadian dioceses and parishes, and funding organs associated with them”.

Diocese of Fort Worth prepares for anticipated litigation by the Episcopal Church

Bishop Jack Iker has written his clergy responding to letters sent to them by the Episcopal Church-appointed bishop of the “rump diocese” threatening inhibition – as well as letters to church leaders notifying them of impending legal action. Bishop Iker explains why TEC and its appointed bishop have no jurisdiction and assures his clergy and church leaders that “We are no longer members of PECUSA [The Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America] and are not subject to their discipline… We very much regret the fact that this matter is being placed before secular courts. We would much prefer a negotiated settlement among brothers and sisters in Christ who have been separated from one another. However, we are fully prepared to make our case in a court of law and will do so when the time comes… With God’s guidance and grace, we shall defend our churches, our faith, and our property against these unjust claims.” (You can also see the threatening letters at the link above.)

In connection with this, Archbishop Greg Venables has also written the clergy and members of the (real) Diocese of Fort Worth. He says, in part, “It is likely that it will take some time before the institutional structures catch up to the realities of the present day situation in the Communion. Until that time, you can be sure of your dual status with us in the Southern Cone. This is true not only for Bishop Iker, but also all of the priests and deacons who received licenses through him under my authority when your diocese came to us… At the last Primates’ Meeting in Alexandria, Egypt, there was clear agreement that you and your bishop are fully members of the Anglican Communion.”

The diocese has also provided its members with a one-page, 10-point “litigation perspective” that is well worth reading.

Archbishop Duncan’s message posted

Anglican Mainstream has posted Archbishop Bob Duncan’s message at his installation as Primate of ACNA in which he spoke from Luke 1:76: “And You my child shall be called the prophet of the most high for you shall go before the Lord to prepare the way for Him.” The Washington Post reporter described the service as a “blow-out” church service with 60 bishops and 323 clergy and 1500 in attendance. The reporter praised the music, saying, “I’ve rarely been in a service where every single piece of music was beautifully done at top level…”

News shorts – Canada

Federation organizes for General Synod 2010

The Federation is holding a meeting in Halifax on Friday, July 10, 7pm, to start the work of organizing for the Anglican Church of Canada’s general synod in that city next year.

New suffragan bishop for the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior (of BC)

Archbishop Terry Buckle has given consent to the election of the Rev Barbara Andrews as suffragan bishop for the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior (the former Diocese of the Cariboo). The consent had been delayed as clarification was sought on several questions.

Anglican Church of Canada – United Church dialogue report

After six years of conversations, the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada have issued a report entitled, Drawing from the same well: the St Brigid report. The ACoC’s dialogue co-chair says of the process, “Perhaps the most important thing that the dialogue has to say to both the Anglican and United churches is that we have a remarkable amount in common. We also think that our differences are significant, but we don’t want our differences to be allowed to overshadow the unity that we do share.”

News shorts – United States

Episcopal Church general convention begins

The general convention of the Episcopal Church (TEC) runs July 8-17 in Anaheim, California. The sexuality debate is expected to dominate the session. The Episcopal News Service tells us that, “Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams will make a presentation addressing the world’s economic crisis during a panel discussion webcast live July 8 from the Episcopal Church’s 76th General Convention, scheduled to take place July 8-17 in Anaheim, California.” We are also told that the Archbishop of Canterbury will meet privately with a group from the TEC House of Bishops to discuss sexuality issues in the church and was set up because Dr Williams “has not had a chance to hear about the broad range of ministry and leadership in which LGBT Episcopalians are involved.”

The American Anglican Council will be active at TEC’s General Convention to support the orthodox who remain in TEC and asks us to pray for their staff and volunteers working at General Convention. Pray that God’s will be done. Also, for those called to pray for TEC’s general convention and those faithfully standing for the truth of God’s Word within TEC, two prayer blogs are focused on this event:

Diocese of South Carolina gives up trying to reform TEC

Bishop Mark Lawrence, the recently elected bishop of the largely orthodox diocese of South Carolina – one of the only dioceses in the Episcopal Church (TEC) experiencing growth – has written his clergy explaining the strategy of the diocese in remaining within TEC. He says, “I see little reward or benefit in expending our resources and energies in unfruitful expeditions trying to stem the tide of revisionism in The Episcopal Church… the creative thrust of the diocese—beyond the gospel imperative to preach the gospel, make disciples, and plant churches as missionary outposts of the Kingdom of God—needs to be elsewhere than in political machinations of the General Convention.”

Distinguishing between the so-called “external strategy” of the Anglican Church in North America, and the “internal strategy” of those working to reform the church from within, he says, “We in South Carolina are then said to be carrying out such an agenda—battling for orthodoxy, seeking to win back the day in The Episcopal Church in some maneuvering of ecclesiastical politics. While some within the Church may indeed be doing this, it is certainly not my intent. The stakes at present are much higher than what is happening in Episcopalianism or the continuing Anglican bodies in North America. If we could be said to be carrying out an “Inside Strategy” it is not towards TEC: it is toward the Anglican Communion. Put simply, we remain inside the structures of the Communion to help shape the emerging Anglicanism of the 21st Century so long as we are able… our “Inside Strategy” is not to tilt at windmills in Quixotic fashion thinking we can turn back the clock to some prior age; it is to help shape the future that is emerging in global Anglicanism from within the Communion.”

US Declaration of Independence rewritten

A S Haley, the orthodox Anglican legal expert who writes under the name Anglican Curmudgeon has (“ever so slightly”) rewritten the US Declaration of Independence to make it into a “Declaration of Religious Independence” from the Episcopal Church tyranny – rather than the 18th century British tyranny of King George III. Calling his Declaration “The unanimous Declaration of the Anglican Church of North America”, he dedicates it to “…to those who throughout the Anglican world, whether “in communion” with Canterbury or not, are steadfast in their resistance of the divisive and ruinous campaign in ECUSA and in ACoC to force the Anglican Communion to recognize and acquiesce in the tenet that all lifestyles are created equal, while all men and women are not.”

He adds:

The forces of resistance are now more powerful than before, because they have organized into a single body. (And already those who have thus far not shied from disruption to achieve their ends are gloating that ACNA’s “unity in diversity” cannot last.) The result is, for the first time in Anglican history, a genuine threat to the exclusivity of the franchises thus far held by ECUSA and ACoC. The new Province is a fact on the ground, and those who make gibes to the effect of “a Province of what Communion?” would do better to look to their own fading ties. The Church of England… cannot be all things to all Anglicans, it may split apart in the near future. Meanwhile, the stress on all the ties that bind Anglicans will be increased to the breaking point by the 76th General Convention that starts next week.

The British launch of the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans – a global movement within the Anglican Communion calling for a return to Biblical faithfulness – occurs Monday, July 6 with a mass rally in London called “Be Faithful!”. The Rev Paul Perkin, a vicar from London described the event and the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans this way: “Some are staying in the Church, but failing to stand for Christian truth and practice; others are standing firm for Christian truth and practice, but are not staying. We are standing, and we are staying.”

Participants in the event included a long list of Church of England bishops as well as international speakers – including a videotaped message from Dr J I Packer. Live streaming video of the event will be available on the AnglicanTV website – and archived to that website shortly after the event.

Please pray for this important event and for unity among the orthodox Anglicans in Britain. Bishop Don has sent greetings our behalf of ANiC members and assured the Be Faithful! participants of our prayer support. He said, “It is a joy to be part of this great Fellowship [of Confessing Anglicans] and although we are separated by a vast ocean, we are with you in heart and mind as the events unfold.”

Even prior to the event, there was considerable reaction. The Rev Dr Andrew Goddard of Fulcrum explains why he will attend the launch of the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (FCA) but not join it. He says, “FCA presents itself as a broad coalition of charismatic, evangelical and Anglo-Catholic Anglicans committed to orthodoxy and mission. This in some ways echoes the Essentials movement in Canada…”

Goddard asks six questions:

Why launch FCA now in the Church of England? His response is that there is not a “felt need for such a fellowship in the Church of England”.

What will FCA do in practice and is it schismatic? His concern is that FCA is distancing itself from the Church of England in finding a new identity in the global alliance forming around the Jerusalem Declaration.

How is FCA being financed and governed? His concern is that FCA leadership will concentrate power and not listen to all segments of its constituency.

4. What place is there in the fellowship for women clergy and supporters of women’s ministry at every level of the church? He says, “Although it is claimed that women’s ordination is recognised as a “second-order” issue within FCA, many of those most associated with FCA are committed to “male headship” as clear biblical teaching and are firmly opposed to both women priests and women bishops.”

5. Can FCA be fully supportive of those who remain in TEC and ACC? He claims, “FCA’s total and apparently unreserved and unquestioning commitment to the creation of ACNA, the new American province, fuels concerns that it too will ultimately embrace such a path.”

6. How can those of us who long for unity and fellowship with those in FCA have these and other questions engaged with constructively by FCA’s leadership?

Bishop Graham Kings (Sherborne), also of Fulcrum, echoes Goddard’s concerns, but takes the opportunity to criticize ACNA as well. He concludes, “The authentic Anglican way forward is not through the autonomous setting up of rival churches, like ACNA; nor through autonomous blessings of same-sex unions and the consecration of people in such unions, like TEC; nor through inflated claims and opportunist alliances, like FCA UK: it is through the glacial gravity of the Covenant process.”

Andrew Carey, writing in the Church of England Newspaper, responds directly and effectively to the critics on the Fulcrum website. He indicates that FCA has learned from the mistakes made by conservatives in North America where responses in earlier decades were “disorganized and fragmented” and ultimately ineffective in preventing the moral and theological decay in their churches. He says orthodox Anglicans in Britain should support FCA because:

“it’s a way of supporting Anglicans in North America who are struggling to remain Anglican in very difficult circumstances.”

“it’s a direct link to the Global South provinces.”

“this is hardly a time to be wringing your hands about who you want to mix with. The urgent need is to be organised now, not leave it far too late, as it was in America.”

He concludes, “So why FCA, and why now? In the American Church too little was done by conservatives, much too late. Sniffily holding the FCA at arm’s length, as Fulcrum seems to want to do, is to repeat the mistakes made by Americans.”

The Rev Andrew Symes responds to Bishop Kings and defends the ACNA, saying “Dr Kings sees the problem in America, and by extension in world Anglicanism, as one purely of differences in church polity, rather than matters of spiritual life and death… In such a time of crisis, when the very survival of orthodox Christianity is at stake, making a respectful but principled stand should be applauded not dismissed… Dr Kings has brushed aside the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans as irrelevant without addressing the fundamental crisis of doctrine that caused it to come about.” Addressing Bishop Kings likening of the Covenant process, in which he places all his faith, to a glacier, Rev Symes says, “…when there is a crisis, a house on fire for example, a hose is more useful than a glacier: speed, and something more relevant to the context, is better than putting everything on ice.”

Dr Lisa Severine Nolland says the critics of FCA are ignoring the evidence that all is not well in the Church of England and asks rhetorically who will stand with those who challenge the “insidious slippage” in the church and the nation. Her response: FCA will stand with them.

Bishop Wallace Benn (Lewes) also addressed the critics, saying, “The FCA is not another organization. It is not seeking to create another church. It is a spiritual movement and fellowship for renewal, reformation and mission – uniquely bringing together those whose key shaping and commitment, but not exclusive identity, has been through the Anglo-Catholic, conservative evangelical, and charismatic expressions of Anglicanism. The FCA movement can do this because it is defined by its centre in the Christian faith as currently embraced in the Jerusalem Declaration and Statement… It would be premature to ask a movement to clarify all its terms or meet all the requirements set by others sadly hesitant to identify with it. What matters, as Bishop Bob Duncan told the launch of the Anglican Church in North America, is “to keep the main thing the main thing”. That is what ‘Be Faithful’ will seek to do by the grace and with the help of God.”

Charles Raven, in an article entitled, “On being moderately faithful: Why Fulcrum is wrong about the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans” addresses Fulcrum’s critique and red herrings – stating, for example, that three of the “Be Faithful” speakers are women. He concludes that those in Fulcrum seem compelled criticize because they are wedded to institutional structures and the status quo and refuse to acknowledge the depth of the crisis. He says, “The most unsettled are evangelicals who want to preserve the status quo, because, unlike liberals, they have to continually convince themselves, in the face of ever more inconvenient facts, that the Church understood theologically in terms of classic Anglicanism is more or less the same thing as the institutional Church.”

Bishop Nazir-Ali causes a stir

The headline in the Sunday Telegraph read: “Change and repent, bishop tells gays”. The newspaper interviewed Bishop Nazir-Al to coincide with the London “gay pride” parade and in anticipation of the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans rally on Monday. The following is extracted from the Telegraph article:

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Dr Nazir-Ali said: “We want to uphold the traditional teaching of the Bible. We believe that God has revealed his purpose about how we are made.

“People who depart from this don’t share the same faith. They are acting in a way that is not normative according to what God has revealed in the Bible.

“The Bible’s teaching shows that marriage is between a man and a woman. That is the way to express our sexual nature.

“We welcome homosexuals, we don’t want to exclude people, but we want them to repent and be changed.”

The bishop added that it is not just homosexuals who need to repent, but all who have strayed from the Bible’s teaching.

He said: “We want to hold on to the traditional teaching of the Church. We don’t want to be rolled over by culture and trends in the Church. We want a movement for renewal. We need a reformation of the Church and the life of the Communion.”

Dr Nazir-Ali, who is resigning from his post in September, said there was a need for the new evangelical movement, called the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, because the Church is already divided.

“We’re two different sorts of religion,” he said. “One has a view of God and the Church and Christianity that is completely different from the other.”

Derek Munn, the director of public affairs for Stonewall, the homosexual campaign group, criticised Dr Nazir-Ali’s comments.

“It is unfortunate that in 2009, a church leader should continue to promote inequality and intolerance

Church of England declining into irrelevance claims bishop

Bishop Paul Richardson (assisting bishop of Newcastle) has told the Telegraph that “Christian Britain is dead” due to declining church attendance and the inaction of Church of England bishops. The Telegraph reports that regular church attendance in the CoE has declined to about 880,000 – rising to 3 million at Christmas. Bishop Richardson predicts at the current rate of decline, the CoE will only survive 30 years.

Archbishop of Canterbury appoints new commission

The newly appointed Unity, Faith and Order Commission will be headed by Archbishop Bernard Ntahoturi, Primate of Burundi and will “promote the deepening of Communion between the Anglican Communion and other Christian Churches and traditions. However, it will also advise the Provinces, the Primates, the Anglican Consultative Council, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, on all questions of ecumenical engagement, as well as on questions of Anglican Faith and Order.”

Around the Communion

The Diocese of Cuba, which has been without an elected bishop since 2003, has again failed to elect a bishop due to a split between “liberal” and “traditional” factions. The Anglican Journal reports that the Cuban Church “…has not elected its own bishop for more than 20 years because of internal divisions within the diocese. [The previous bishop] was appointed by the Metropolitan Council of Cuba – composed of the primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, the U.S. presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church and the primate of the West Indies – which has overseen the church in Cuba since it separated from The Episcopal Church in 1967.” The previous bishop is said to be willing to stay on as interim bishop.

The Institute on Religion and Democracy has published an interesting article explaining the role of the government in creating problems within the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe by engineering the election of a government supporter as the “puppet pseudo-Anglican Archbishop of Harare”. Although this bishop has been deposed by his province – the Anglican Province of Central Africa, he clings to power with government support. In February, the Primates meeting in Egypt issued a statement in which they stated they did not recognize the government supported bishops and called for the full restoration of Anglican property to Anglicans under the authority of newly elected Bishop of Harare, Chad Gandiya.

Sudan – George Conger writes: “Writing in support of the June 18 “Sudan Day of Action” organized by Baroness Cox and the Sudan Action Group, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams has called upon Khartoum government and the former rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement to act swiftly to implement all of the terms of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA)… Dr. Williams also urged the international community not to be sidetracked by the “continuing horrors” of Darfur. “We need to recognize that unless the commitments around the CPA are honoured there is no chance of settling the conflict in Darfur,” he said. “I therefore urge a renewal of commitment and a readiness to work for measurable results as soon as possible,” the archbishop said.”

India – A judge in India has ruled that the Anglican Church there must abide by its canons and cannot dismiss a bishop in contravention of those canons.

Southern Cone – The Anglican Province of the Southern Cone is growing “by leaps and bounds” according to the Bishop of Bolivia, Frank Lyons. Bishop Lyons reported to the recent Anglican Church in North America assembly that a March meeting of the House of Bishops of the Southern Cone authorized the creation of nine new auxiliary and suffragan bishops to handle the church growth. Bishop Robinson Cavalcanti of the Diocese of Recife (also in the Southern Cone) told the Assembly that, in the four years since he was deposed by the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil (IECB) and accepted by Archbishop Greg Venables of the Southern Cone, his diocese has doubled in size and nine congregations currently in the IECB are petitioning to be accepted into the Diocese of Recife. Praise the Lord for His blessing on His faithful church. George Conger provides details.

Telegraph – July 4 2009 – Change and repent, bishop tells gays

Worth reading

The Rev Dr Phillip Turner, of the Anglican Communion Institute, discusses the exclusivity of the “progressive’s” agenda, saying the actions of the liberals betray the falsehood of the claim to inclusiveness. He says, “The logic used by progressive Episcopalians to explain and justify TEC’s “inclusive” agenda is in point of fact necessarily “exclusive” of contrary opinion… The standard justification for the inclusive agenda is almost without exception stated in terms of justice… In the minds of progressive Episcopalians, to acquiesce in matters of injustice and to allow ignorance, fear, and prejudice to go unopposed is a betrayal of what to their mind is central to the Gospel message.”

In discussing liberal Episcopalians approach to church politics, he says, “Domestically, progressive Episcopalians seek more centralized authority… Internationally, however, they plead for pluralism in the form of a polycentric communion that allows for wide variations in belief and practice…The plea for pluralism on an international level is but a tactic to protect moves toward centralization and uniformity domestically. Despite the fact that there is a logical contradiction in arguing for increased centralism on the one hand and increased diversity on the other, this strategy was clearly evident at the recent meeting of The Anglican Consultative Council where TEC’s representatives sought to derail the fourth section of the draft covenant that provides for consequences if Provinces act in ways other members of the Communion believe not in accord with Christian belief and practice.”

Please pray…

For the many ANiC “projects” across the country building congregations and setting the framework to launch as church plants

For wisdom as ANiC seeks to find more effective ways of ministering to and encouraging “Orphaned Anglicans” who have no orthodox Anglican church in their community.

That we would share the Good News with those around us who need to meet our Lord & Saviour.

For the legal cases

For Mr Justice Stephen Kelleher as he reviews all the written material and considers his decision in the Vancouver court case. May God grant insight and discernment.

For the Windsor case (involving St Aidan’s) which is being dealt with in London.

For the congregations involved in court proceedings and disputes. Pray for peace, particularly for the wardens and trustees who are on the front lines and bear the burden of responsibility. Pray for a continued focus on, and blessing upon, their ministry in the midst of this turmoil.

For continued contributions to the Legal Defence Fund so that legal costs can be covered and the churchwardens and trustees are not at personal financial risk.

For the leaders and parishioners of the dioceses pursuing eviction of and damages against ANiC congregations and wardens in court.

For repentance and healing, and that those being persecuted will be able to forgive so there can be hope for future reconciliation.

For the Anglican Church in North America, Archbishop Robert Duncan and the 28 dioceses.

For the unity of orthodox Anglicans in the Communion.

For our national, provincial and civic leaders as well as for our nation. May God be pleased to grant repentance and cause a revival to sweep our land.

And now a word from our sponsor

Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments! His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.

Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries. He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.

The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish!

News shorts – Anglican Church in North America (ACNA)

Anglican Church in North America constituted

The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) provincial assembly is underway in Bedford, Texas. On Monday, the delegates approved the constitution of the Anglican Church in North America, officially bringing the new Provincial structure into existence.

Bishop Duncan also announced that:

the Venerable Charlie Masters, ANiC’s executive archdeacon and national director, will serve as deputy chair of the ACNA Provincial Council until December when the new Provincial Council – composed of one bishop, one clergy and two lay members from each diocese – comes into force. Archbishop-designate Robert Duncan is chair.

Mrs Cheryl Chang, ANiC chancellor, is an assistant chancellor of ACNA. Mr Hugo Blankingship is chancellor and Mr Scott Ward is also assistant chancellor.

ANiC’s Canon David Short was the Bible teacher Tuesday morning, June 23 – speaking on Acts 5:17-42. He drew parallels to what people throughout ACNA are experiencing and emphasizing the freedom of God’s sovereignty, the freedom of the gospel – proclaimed even during a trial – and the freedom of God’s people to be fearless in following Christ.

We have a page on our website dedicated to the Assembly with a number of good links.

On the Assembly website you’ll find a number of news releases as well as the daily newsletter for attendees – in addition to photos (including a number with people you’ll recognize), video and other documents

George Conger has written a good summary of the Assembly. (Read the whole thing.) He says:

The Anglican Communion’s 39th Province-in-waiting was formed this week, as the Anglican Church of North America (ACNA) held its founding convocation at St Vincent’s Cathedral in Bedford, Texas.

God, history, and provinces representing the overwhelming majority of the members of the Anglican Communion were on the side of the ACNA, Pittsburgh Bishop Robert Duncan told the 234 delegates drawn from the ACNA’s 28 founding jurisdictions including four former dioceses of the Episcopal Church, representing some 700 congregations and 100,000 Anglicans in the US and Canada.

Delegates attending the June 22-25 convocation formally adopted the ACNA’s Constitution and Canons and were also addressed by Bishop Duncan — who was elected archbishop on June 21 by a meeting of the ACNA’s House of Bishops — and California megachurch pastor Rick Warren, and Metropolitan Jonah, the head of the Orthodox Church in America.

Archbishop Duncan lauded the comprehensiveness and unity of the new province, which bridged the traditional theological divide between High and Low churchmen, Anglo-Catholics and Evangelicals, in addition to the modern question of the ordination of women.

The future for the new province was bright, he argued. “We are proud to be part of the great reformation of the Christian church” now taking place as there was “an ever-growing stream of North American Protestantism that has embraced” a foundational view of Scripture, while “at the same time Pentecostals and evangelicals are moving towards Tradition.”

…“Our adversary, the devil, is also interested in what is happening here,” he said, for a “reformed Anglican Church in North America is one of the enemy’s greatest concerns,” and he will “try to draw us into old ways and old fights.”

“It is essential that we stand together” and “move on,” Archbishop Duncan said.

Archbishop Robert Duncan installed as first primate

Tonight Bishop Robert Duncan became Archbishop Duncan – and our new primate. In his sermon, Archbishop Duncan set the goal for the Anglican Church in North America of planting 1000 new churches during his five year term as primate. He also challenged members to study and memorize Scripture. “If you don’t know it, you can’t live it,” he said. You can get a more complete account on the AEC blog of the sermon and very impressive service, held in Christ Church (Plano, TX) – once the largest church in TEC with a massive, impressive campus and a reported congregation of 2000.

ACNA College of Bishops confirms election of 8 bishops-designate

The Anglican Church in North America College of Bishops, meeting June 20-21, prior to the Assembly, confirmed the election of eight bishops for several dioceses. In addition to the three ANiC bishops-designate, the remaining five are:

For the unity of orthodox Anglicans in the Communion.

For our national, provincial and civic leaders as well as for our nation. May God be pleased to grant repentance and cause a revival to sweep our land.

And now a word from our sponsor

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

From Bishop Don

My dear ANiC Sisters and Brothers,

It is my joy to report on a process that was set in motion at our first synod in November 2008. At that synod, Bishop Malcolm and I were entrusted with the task of identifying three faithful leaders to be consecrated as bishops in the Anglican Network in Canada.

In fulfilling our responsibilities, Bishop Malcolm and I met earlier this year to prayerfully develop a shortlist. After we’d discussed our choices, we opened an envelope containing nominations submitted by synod delegates last November. To our great joy, our shortlist and the individuals nominated by synod members were virtually identical. This we took as clear confirmation of God’s leading.

Archbishop Greg Venables gave his seal of approval in April in London, when I met and discussed the selections with him. Then, this weekend, the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) College of Bishops also endorsed our selections.

I am delighted to tell you that, God willing, at our 2nd synod this November, we will consecrate:

The Rev Stephen Leung, rector, Church of the Good Shepherd (Vancouver, BC)

The Venerable Charlie Masters, Executive Archdeacon and National Director of the Anglican Network in Canada (Burlington, ON)

The Venerable Trevor Walters, Territorial Archdeacon (BC) and rector, St Matthews (Abbotsford, BC)

As part of this process, we also had approached another individual whom we thought especially suitable but after much prayerful discernment he came to the conclusion that he was not being so called at this particular time.

More extensive information on each of our bishops-designate will be available in the coming weeks.

All three will retain their respective roles at least for the next year, serving as “Rector Missionary Bishops” – which is the norm for a substantial majority of the College of Bishops in ACNA.

Bishop-designate Stephen will have a specialized role of ministering to Asian Anglicans in Canada. Our other two bishops-designate will be given geographic responsibility in eastern and western Canada. Charlie also will continue as national director, while Trevor will continue his ministry at St Matthew’s in Abbotsford though his actual role in that parish is under review.

I will continue in my position of moderator and as such be the diocesan bishop until November 2010.

Please thank God with me and do keep these bishops-designate and their families in your prayers

+Donald

From Marilyn Jacobson ANiC communications

Many people have worked years – even decades – to see the creation of a biblical, missionary and united Anglican Church. With this inaugural Assembly, that vision has become a reality. The Anglican Network in Canada is one of 28 dioceses in this new North American Church, so we have official delegates at the Assembly. As well, a number of our members are here as observers; they just didn’t want to miss this historic event!

You can learn more about the Anglican Church in North America, the Provincial Assembly, Archbishop-designate Robert Duncan, the 28 dioceses, and much more on our website. These two especially important Assembly information sources are also linked from our website:

The Provincial Assembly website – which is also optimized for web capable cell phones – where you will find:

Live streaming video of Assembly sessions as they occur (thanks to AnglicanTV) – and a complete Assembly schedule so you can plan ahead. These videos will also be archived and posted for later viewing.

Photos from the Assembly – as well as a few pictures of folks you might recognize! Already there are photos posted from the College of Bishops meeting that is going on this weekend. (Be sure to see the full gallery of photos by following the link at the top of the photo page.)

Key documents being considered by the Assembly delegates – especially the constitution and canons and news releases.

The AEC blog – intrepid AEC blogger, Peter Lillington, arrives in Bedford this evening and will be faithfully blogging for the many who loyally read and comment on this widely followed Canadian Anglican blog.

Finally, Twitter users are welcome to keep up with the inaugural provincial assembly by following “acnaassembly.”

Court case involving Vancouver-area parishes concludes

On Thursday, June 11, the lawyers for both sides wrapped their final arguments. Full details of all each day’s proceedings are on the ANiC website. Our legal team did a terrific job of defending the ANiC parishes’ claims to the parish properties for their established ministries. We thank God for their skill and faithfulness.

The decision now rests with Mr Justice Stephen Kelleher. He has an enormous number of documents (affidavits) to review as he weighs the arguments. A decision is likely to take several months. Please pray for insight and wisdom for Mr Justice Kelleher, for confidence in God’s sovereignty for the parishes involved, and for God’s good and perfect will to be done. Whatever the outcome, Bishop Donald Harvey has noted that this trial has united us in prayer as never before.

Media coverage of the court case:

Anglican Journal – June 13 2009 – New Westminster diocese court case hearings end

St Aidan’s (Windsor) negotiates interim arrangement with Diocese of Huron

The Rev Tom Carmen has written St Aidan’s parishioners to tell them about changes to service times as a result of an interim sharing arrangement negotiated with the Diocese of Huron. The agreement went into effect this past Sunday.

St Hilda’s keeps giving away freebies

Hard on the heels of it free garage “sale”, St Hilda’s (Oakville), held a free car wash. Parishioner David Jenkins tells us that St Hilda’s free events are “an outreach to the community to illustrate the love, grace and salvation of God which is offered to us free through Jesus Christ.” St Hilda’s also offers “Freebie Friday” each week for students of a nearby high school. David tells us:

Every Friday St. Hilda’s ANiC feeds about 200 schoolchildren; they hear a short gospel message and sometimes they ask for prayer. Friday [June 12] was the last Freebie Friday before the summer. 200 hotdogs were served, some wonderful bread from Artisano’s – peanut butter, lots of potato chips, and fruit punch… The lunch always ends with the phrase, “have a great weekend – and remember that God loves you, Jesus loves you, and we love you, too.””

Bishop Don is looking forward to spending the morning of June 28 with St Hilda’s – his second annual visitation with this parish.

St George’s (Lowville/Burlington) is adding an evening service

For the past year, St George’s has held two Sunday morning services in Burlington. Now, effective June 21, they’re adding an evening service on the third Sunday of every month in Milton – which is closer to their original location of Lowville.

New metropolitan elected for ACoC province of Rupert’s Land

The Anglican Journal reports that Bishop David Ashdown of the diocese of Keewatin was elected “archbishop of Keewatin and the metropolitan of the Province of Rupert’s Land” at the provincial synod, June 11. He succeeds Archbishop John Clarke who retired earlier this year.

News shorts – Anglican Church in North America (ACNA)

Excitement building for ACNA’s inaugural provincial assembly, June 22-25

Although only a few ANiC delegates and observers are able to attend ACNA’s first provincial assembly, everyone will be able to follow the event online. Peter Lillington will be blogging live from Bedford. You can follow along and send your comments and questions to Peter via the AEC blog.

ACNA Governance Task Force comments on the Constitution and Canons

Members of ACNA Governance Task Force – including ANiC’s Chancellor, Cheryl Chang – worked feverishly between October and April preparing the draft constitution and canons that the provincial assembly will consider for adoption. They commented on their work in a document just posted online. In the document, Cheryl notes the diversity of input and the cooperative spirit amongst the task force members. She says, “The Canons and Constitution being presented for ratification are not intended to be perfect. They are intended to provide a minimalist structure to support the primary task of growing the church in North America… It is clear that we have different cultural issues, legal systems and charitable rules, and that creates certain practical problems. However, such problems are not insurmountable and we are grateful the gospel has no such obstructions to our common mission and vision. These Canons and Constitution were intended to be flexible enough to adapt in ways to overcome such worldly obstacles. It will take our continued cooperation and the grace of God to ensure that we facilitate and support one another in the mission of the church for the glory of God.”

Bishop Robert Duncan, Archbishop-designate of ACNA, also provided his views on the draft constitution and canons. He notes the six principles underlying work on the canons and constitution:

confessional unity, expressed in matters of Faith and Order;

subsidiarity, where what may be wisely left to the local level (both diocesan and congregational) is left to the local level, including property ownership;

missionary focus, especially in structures, roles and representation;

flexibility, recognizing the diversity of Godly approaches common among the partners coming into union;

disciplinary reform, including address of concerns for Holy Matrimony and Holy Orders, as well as provision of a provincial tribunal.

collegial accountability, especially in matters relating to bishops.

Bishop Duncan adds, “The notion of a Provincial Assembly focused on mission rather than governance is among our deepest hopes. Very specifically, we do not want to repeat the General Convention (USA) or General Synod (Canada) experience. This is where the notion of “ratification” at Assembly derives. Our vision is for fairly straightforward up or down votes on articles and canons. If the Provincial Council has discerned it rightly, and we have significant consensus, a matter is ratified. If not, the matter is sent back to Provincial Council for more work. Most things, if not easily agreeable, can wait another year or two.”

ACNA committee memberships posted

The membership of numerous committees formed by the Common Cause Partnership to accomplish the work of building the Anglican Church in North America has been published. ACNA is recommending that these committees remain in place. A good representation of ANiC members and leaders are included.

EpiscopalLife Online is very interested to see the names of two TEC bishops in the ranks of those on ACNA committees: Bishop Peter Beckwith (Springfield) is on ACNA’s ecumenical relations committee, while Bishop Keith Ackerman (retired bishop of Quincy and assisting bishop of Springfield) is on the executive committee, as well as on admissions, prayer book and common worship committees.

Church planting in Victoria – supporters wanted

The Table – an ACNA church plant initiative in Victoria is looking for partners, See Andy and Josh’s video explaining what they’re up to.

News shorts – United States

Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori “deposing” two more bishops

The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church (TEC), Katherine Jefferts Schori, has sent letters purporting to depose both Bishop David Bane, who resigned as Bishop of Southern Virginia and is now with the Anglican Church in North America, and Bishop Edward MacBurney, retired Bishop of Quincy and now serving as assisting bishop for the Anglican Diocese of Quincy which voted in 2008 to come under the jurisdiction of the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone. As in the past, the letters claim that the two bishops renounced their orders under the canons of TEC. David Virtue reports that “Both men deny they have renounced their orders or abandoned the communion of the church.”

Is a Buddhist bishop “too unorthodox even for the Episcopal Church?”

A Christianity Today article predicts that bishop-elect of the Diocese of Northern Michigan Kevin Thew Forrester will fail to receive the needed support from the dioceses and bishops of the Episcopal Church (TEC). The Rev Thew Forrester has received Buddhist “lay ordination” and has also rewritten the church’s baptismal covenant, the Apostles’ Creed and portions of the Book of Common Prayer to reflect his rejection of historic Christian doctrines. While some bishops and dioceses rejected his doctrinal stand, others were miffed that he didn’t go through the appropriate channels before rewriting the historic Christian doctrinal statement; and still others were simply concerned about the process used to “elect” him; his was the only name on the ballot.

Diocese of Quincy (Southern Cone) to elect a diocesan bishop in October

Since the retirement of Bishop Keith Ackerman last November, Quincy’s standing committee has acted as the ecclesiastical authority. However, the Living Church reports that will come to an end with the election of a new bishop in October at the diocese’s annual synod. However, “Under the proposed constitution and canons of the ACNA, approval from at least two-thirds of the members of the College of Bishops would be needed within 60 days of the election in order for the consecration to proceed.” Nominations will be accepted beginning July 1.

News shorts – International

Following the money: the Anglican Communion listening process “Trojan horse”

This story was hinted at during the Anglican Consultative Council meetings in Jamaica last month. Now, following extensive research, the American Anglican Council has written a full exposé on the funding behind the next round of the listening process initiated at the ACC meeting, bringing into question the integrity and motivation of the entire process. We learn that the $1.5 million to fund this latest Communion-wide listening process comes from an individual who advocates a sexual ethic foreign to Biblical Christianity – not the organization stated by the Anglican Communion Office earlier. We also learn that the funding of the project will be monitored by an organization dedicated to a view of human sexuality that is incompatible with the stated position of the majority of Anglican bishops worldwide. The question then is, how can a productive honest conversation take place, given this fundamental bias in the process? With such an agenda at work, what provinces would want to participate in the process?

Displaced women and children hit hardest by fighting in Pakistan

The Ecumenical News service reports that the fighting in Pakistan between the Taliban and the government forces in the northwest of the country has displaced 2.5 million people. The report carried in the Anglican Journal also states that, in this male-dominated culture and in the absence of husbands who stayed behind to protect the property, displaced Pakistani women and children are not able to properly access humanitarian assistance in the camps – especially food and hygiene facilities. Please pray for Christian organizations seeking to help and for those needing the aid.

Church in Sri Lanka calls for safeguarding of democratic rights

The Anglican Journal also carries a report from Sri Lanka which indicates that, following the government’s victory over the Tamil insurgents, 300 000 Tamil civilians in refugee camps are being held in terrible conditions for screening by security forces. “The Sri Lankan government has rejected international demands for access by aid workers to the refugees.” In addition, human rights activists are reportedly being harassed.

Diocese of Sydney suffers devastating investment loss

The Church of England Newspaper reports that the Diocese of Sydney, led by Archbishop Peter Jensen has been hit hard by the global recession, losing more that half of its investment value. While many dioceses in North America, England and elsewhere had also been hit hard, the Diocese of Sydney had borrowed extensively in recent years as part of its investment strategy.

Archbishop Jensen said, the strategy of borrowing, although profitable in the past, had “accentuated our losses. As a result, our investments have fallen by more than half and the distribution of money from our investments has been cut by 50%. Ministries which depend on this funding will be severely impacted.” The Diocese of Sydney has been a faithful and generous supporter of Biblically-faithful Anglican endeavors in the past. Please pray that the clergy and leadership will know God’s comfort and that this will be used for God’s greater purposes.

Cyclone devastates West Bengal (India) and Bangladesh

The Church of England Newspaper reports that over five million people were displaced in Bangladesh and several hundred killed in both India and Bangladesh by a May 25 cyclone, and the resulting tidal surges and floods washed away fields, roads and houses. The Moderator of the Church of Bangladesh, Bishop Paul Sarker, and the Bishop of Durgapur, Bishop Probal Kanto Dutta request prayer.

Scottish Episcopal Church elects new Primus (primate)

The sole nominee for the position, Bishop David Chillingworth, was elected Primus of the /Scottish Episcopal Church taking over from the Most Rev Dr Idris Jones.

Soul food

Cultivating a culture of death

In The strange double standards of abortion, Professor John Stackhouse weighs in on the abortion debate. With recent US polls showing that fewer Americans now support abortion and with the murder just weeks ago of a US doctor who specialized in late term abortions, the issue is again being debated in the media. His thoughtful essay concludes: “I’m angry about our absurd political situation that makes vigilantism even thinkable. Most of us, at least, can agree that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare”— even most pro-lifers can imagine extreme cases in which an abortion might be justified. But to have such weak anti-abortion legislation in the United States, and to have no anti-abortion law at all in Canada, only breeds martyrs on the extremes and makes the rest of us into hypocrites.”

In “Thoughts from as ex-fetus”, National Post Columnist George Jonas, who does not consider himself a pro-lifer, asks, “Will our grandchildren say we were enlightened or barbaric? … [Speaking] in my capacity as an ex-fetus, I say controlling someone else’s body is where abortionists and their assassins meet. Please note that I say “meet.” I don’t say justify. Nothing justifies the assassin. Does anything justify the abortionist?”

Also on the pro-life theme, Faye Sonier, Legal Counsel with The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, has written, “On a personal note: Euthanasia, assisted suicide and abortion. Recounting her own personal brushes with potential death and reflecting on legislation before the House of Commons (Bill C-384), she concludes, “When life in general is devalued, the life of every vulnerable individual in Canada will be threatened. Should I be forced to revisit my sickly past, either from illness or old age, I don’t want to risk being in a society that would choose to respond to my need with premature death as its solution. My Canada will offer optimal health and palliative care services as a society that assures me of my value even though I may not be perfect.”

West Vancouver pharmacist, Cristina Alarcon writes in “Right to die? How about right to live”, carried in the National Post, about the growing culture of death in western society and on an international symposium she recently attended on euthanasia and assisted suicide. She says, “Euthanasia advocates claim that there is no slippery slope, that there are safeguards to ensure that only the terminally ill are “aided in dying.” However, after attending the symposium it seems more likely to me that there is a slope, that it is well greased and that we have slipped to the bottom. Only time will tell what the consequences might be.”

Dr Matt Anderson, a Minnesota-based obstetrician/gynecologist reports that “pro-life doctor groups worldwide are banding together to form a Hippocratic Registry of Physicians” based on Ottawa.

A matter of pride?

Dr Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, comments on US President Obama’s proclamation that June is “Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride month”:

The Bible is straightforward in its consistent identification of homosexual acts as inherently sinful. Homosexual acts are not singled out as the only form of sexual sin. The Bible condemns any number of heterosexual sins, ranging from fornication and adultery to a catalogue of forbidden acts and relationships.

Beyond sexual sins, the Bible condemns sins as various and deadly as anger, envy, covetousness, disobedience, gluttony, greed, and dishonesty. The Bible declares all of us to be sinners and makes clear that no one of us can even understand the full sinfulness of our own sin. Sin is deceptive and addictive. Sin leads to death, judgment, and eternal destruction.

The Bible allows no room for finding pride in sin… To do so is not only to confuse sin, but to undermine the Gospel of Jesus Christ… Evangelical Christians dare not respond with a claim of moral superiority as if we are not ourselves sinners. But we must be clear that we cannot find pride in sin, whether these are our own sins or those of others. The Gospel of Christ simply does not allow us to see sin — any sin — as a matter of pride.

After examining the scientific literature, psychologist Trayce Hansen reports that children raised by same-sex couples “are significantly more likely than the general population to develop a non-heterosexual sexual preference. She reports that the “studies thus far find that between 8 percent and 21 percent of homosexually parented children ultimately identify as non-heterosexual… For comparison purposes, approximately 2 percent of the general population are non-heterosexual. Therefore, if these percentages continue to hold true, children of homosexuals have a 4 to 10 times greater likelihood of developing a non-heterosexual preference than other children.”

A disturbing aspect of her report is the finding that these results have been intentionally concealed by the many researchers due to their self-proclaimed biases and the fear that the information could influence social policy decisions.

Please pray…

For the Anglican Church in North America provincial assembly, June 22-25 – and particularly for ANiC delegates and leaders as they prepare and travel to Texas.

For the legal cases

For the now concluded Vancouver court hearing – for insight and wisdom for Mr Justice Kelleher, for confidence in God’s sovereignty for the parishes involved, and for God’s good and perfect will to be done.

For the people of St Aidan’s as they adjust their services and ministries to accommodate the negotiated interim possession agreement with the Diocese of Huron.

For continued contributions to the Legal Defence Fund so that legal costs can be covered and so the churchwardens and trustees will not be at personal financial risk.

For the leaders and parishioners of the dioceses pursuing eviction of and damages against ANiC congregations and wardens in court.

For new ANiC congregations, church plants and projects. May they know the Lord’s leading and experience His blessing on their congregations.

For upcoming parish events, especially the 100th Anniversary celebration service at St Chad’s (Toronto) on June 21.

For wisdom as ANiC seeks to find more effective ways of ministering to and encouraging “Orphaned Anglicans” who have no orthodox Anglican church in their community.

That we would share the Good News with those around us who need to meet our Lord & Saviour.

For the unity of orthodox Anglicans in the Communion.

For our national, provincial and civic leaders as well as for our nation. May God be pleased to grant repentance and cause a revival to sweep our land.

For those suffering in Sri Lanka and Pakistan due to military actions, and in Bangladesh and India as a result of the cyclone and flooding.

For the Diocese of Sydney hit hard by the financial crisis. May God turn this difficulty into good.

And now a word from our sponsor

You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

From Anglican Samizdat, a bit old but some things, like rotting corpses, don’t come to the surface right away

In January 2007 a number of ACoC bishops, clergy and lay people signed an open letter exhorting general synod to approve same sex blessings. Take a look at the list of people who signed it to see if your rector is there.

From Brandon signers are Tim Spencer, Amelia Reid, Gordon & Mary Dove, Margaret Yorke, and the Dean Robin Walker. Missing is Jim Njovegan’s, a bit of a surprise. And overlooked was Bob Bettson’s wife Coline.

Here is the letter:

Living God’s Blessing

Anglicans of homosexual orientation have formally, by episcopal decision, been accepted as equal members of the Anglican Church of Canada since 1979. However, that acceptance did not include accepting any form of sexual expression for homosexual persons, who therefore have never been treated as equal, embodied persons. Though celibacy is understood in scripture to be a vocation (Matt. 19:12), it has been imposed on gays and lesbians, making it not vocation but compulsion, and denying them any sanctioned form of sexual intimacy.

The affirmation in 2004 by General Synod, the church’s highest governing body, of “the sanctity and integrity of committed, adult same-sex relationships” was a step towards real equality. However, since then, there has been a moratorium on further use of blessings outside New Westminster. In the face of the growing split in the Anglican Communion, General Synod 2004 referred the question of blessing same-sex relationships to the Primate’s Theological Commission. Its St. Michael Report has recommended that such blessings are a question of doctrine, but not of core doctrine. This means that General Synod will be able, in 2007, to affirm the blessing of same-sex relationships.

We believe that:

1. Silence contributes to the injustices experienced by gays and lesbians.

2. Truth, love and justice are biblical imperatives not to be jeopardized by clamours for unanimity disguised as “unity”. Unity in Christ, proclaimed as Lord, requires truth and justice for all.

3. We have the obligation to use reason to interpret scripture in the light of new knowledge and understandings.

4. It is unbiblical, unjust, ethically wrong, and morally unsound to impose celibacy on gay and lesbian clergy.

5. Because the core of the gospel message is covenant with God, with family, and with community, the covenants between same-sex couples should be affirmed and blessed by the church, as is the case for heterosexual couples.

The church has acknowledged the sanctity and integrity of adult committed same-sex relationships. Civil marriage for same-sex couples is now the norm in Canada. Thus it is time for the church to accept as valid all marriages performed in Canada, and to bless the marriages and unions of all who request such a blessing. This can happen while the discussion continues about the possibility of the solemnization of same-sex marriages in the church.

For anyone who doubts that the the Anglican church has abdicated its role of setting moral standards for society, pay attention to the last paragraph: the church defers to culture for ethical inspiration.

Here is a chart of the number of clergy who signed this by diocese:

The next chart is probably more interesting, since it show the percentage of clergy in each diocese that signed the letter. I had to estimate the total number of clergy in some dioceses, so, although it paints an interesting picture, it isn’t 100% accurate:

Notice the Dioceses of the Yukon, Arctic, Athabaska, Cariboo (?), Central Nerwfoundland, Keewatin, Saskatechwan and Moosonee had no clergy signers

Court case involving Vancouver-area parishes enters final week

The first week of the Vancouver court case was devoted to the opening statement and witnesses for the ANiC parishes. The second week was for the opening statement and witnesses for the Diocese of New Westminster. The final week, beginning Monday, June 8, will be devoted to concluding arguments by the lawyers for both sides. Summaries of each day’s proceedings, as well as a wealth of related material, are available on the ANiC website.

The Rev Charles Raven has written an excellent summary, noting the importance of the case. He says: “So what is being revealed in this case is that the Diocese of New Westminster’s defence gives rise to a line of argument which leads inexorably to the conclusion that Anglican Churches do not in principle have any doctrine which cannot be changed, but… it is maintained that the institutional structures of episcopacy which arose to preserve this doctrine are beyond debate… [I]t is clear that what is evolving in New Westminster is a ‘new gospel’… The revisionist aim is not, initially, to exclude orthodox ministry, but to neutralise it through defining the church institutionally. If it can be generally accepted that doctrine is provisional and can be changed by a Church following due process… then the legal ground has been conceded and the defences against false teaching are undermined.”

Media coverage of the court case:

Vancouver Sun – June 2 2009 – It’s all church property – but which church?

Abbotsford News – June 5 2009 – Church lawsuit in court

Announcing: The Church of the Ascension

The ANiC congregation forming in Langley, BC has settled on a new name – Church of the Ascension. During the summer, Sunday services are planned for the fourth Sunday of each month – June 28, July 26 and August 23 – at 11am at Willoughby Recreation Centre, Room #1, 200 St and 80 Ave, Langley. Regular Bible studies are also ongoing. Launch plans for the fall – with the first regular weekly Sunday service slated for September 13 – are coming together. Bishop Ron says, “We give thanks to God for the many people that are showing interest and the many who have enrolled as parishioners. Please pray for the Church of the Ascension, that the Lord will use her to gather many to himself, and to help many find joy in Him, and abundance of life.” For more information you can contact Bishop Ron.

And Emmaus makes it 30

On Sunday June 7, Bishop Donald Harvey officially welcomed ANiC’s newest congregation, now known as Emmaus Church (Montreal, PQ). The former “ANiC Atwater Project” celebrated their first regular service with their priest-in-charge, the Rev Dean Brady, preaching and Bishop Don as celebrant. The Emmaus parish, ANiC’s 30th, numbers about 105 adults and youth plus 25 children – most former parishioners at St Stephen’s (Anglican Church of Canada).

More clergy added to ANiC

Bishop Don has given ANiC licences to three more clergy. The Rev Dr Jamin Hivale-Quibell and the Rev George Quibell are currently parishioners at Good Shepherd (St Catharines, ON) and have been active in prison chaplaincy ministry. The Rev Dean Brady is the priest-in-charge of ANiC’s new Emmaus Church in Montreal. Like the Quibell’s, Rev Brady relinquished his Anglican Church of Canada licence prior to receiving a licence to minister in ANiC.

Clergy position available

St George’s (Ottawa) is looking for an associate minister to oversee and develop the spiritual formation, Christian education requirements of the congregation from nursery through adult programs. The position includes some liturgical and preaching responsibilities. Applicants should be ordained Anglican priests in good standing with at least two years’ experience; and members of the Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) – or willing to become members. For more information see the position posting or email the church office or call St George’s at (613) 235-1636.

Sunday service children’s ministry resource online

The Rev Andrew Hewlett (St Mary’s Open Gate) is developing a resource website for the Sunday service children’s Bible lesson. The short stories and lessons on the website are Biblical, fun, interactive and Christ-centred. Check it out!

ANiC parish gets unexpected endorsement

ANiC registrar, Brian Ellis, points out a Mad Padre blog entry, in which the writer, an Anglican Church of Canada priest and Canadian Forces chaplain comments favourably on his visit to St George’s (Ottawa) on Pentecost Sunday. Titling his entry, An amazing day in church, he writes, “I can only say that the Holy Spirit blew my socks off this morning.”

News shorts – Anglican Church in North America (ACNA)

Registration for ACNA provincial assembly closes June 10

Space is limited and filling up fast for the inaugural Assembly of the Anglican Church in North America. Already more 700 have registered from across North America. More details of the schedule have been announced including optional seminars and tours specifically for non-delegates, including seminars on the organizational structure of ACNA (co-lead by the Ven Charlie Masters of ANiC), serving the church in missions, and Islam in North America.

ACNA constitution and canons explored

A number of blogs have featured discussions about various aspects of the draft ACNA constitution and canons. In response, Bishop John Rodgers, retired dean of Trinity School for Ministry, offers an evangelical Anglican perspective on these documents. And Bishop Wantland – retired bishop of Eau Claire (Wisconsin) and assisting bishop to Jack Iker, Bishop of Forth Worth – provides an Anglo-Catholic perspective.

Former Bishop of Paraguay excited about ACNA

Bishop John Ellison, retired Bishop of Paraguay, has written about his excitement regarding the formation of a new province in North America. He addresses the need for doctrinal unity trumping institutional unity. In his article, The marks of a true church are seen in ACNA, he says, “My firm conviction is that the ACNA shows the marks of the true church as affirmed by the Nicene and the Niceno Constantinoplan Creeds, that is to say: apostolicity, catholicity, holiness and unity.” He then expands on each of these four marks. See also a videotaped interview with Bishop Ellison.

Anglican Catholic Church acting primate declines invitation to ACNA assembly

In declining Bishop Duncan’s invitation to the upcoming provincial assembly in Bedford, Texas, the Most Reverend Mark Haverland, acting primate of the Anglican Catholic Church, cites differences in first principles, chiefly women’s ordination. You can read his letter of explanation.

Inviting people to The Table in Victoria

The Revs Josh Wilton and Andy Withrow, who are planting an ACNA church plant in Victoria, BC, decided to get to know the neighbours. You can watch their engaging video of interviews with Victorians in which they asked about superhero powers, the nature of God, and how they’d spend a financial windfall. You can see their website for their church plant, which they’ve called The Table. Canadian Christianity posted an article on their ministry as well.

News shorts – Canada

Diocese of Toronto synod using indaba to discuss blessings

Following up on the earlier statement form the Toronto bishops, Bishop Colin Johnson kicked off the diocese’s synod by laying the framework for the ensuing “indaba” discussions – “not leading to a vote but leading to an opportunity to give advice and feedback”. With the bishops having already made their decision to begin blessings, Bishop Johnson said for a one year trial period, a limited number of parishes would be allowed to offer prayers of blessing to same-sex couples and that pastoral guidelines, but not an authorized rite, would be established.

Diocese of Nova Scotia and PEI synod defeats motion supporting Biblical marriage

Scott reports on the AEC blog that the recent synod of the Diocese of Nova Scotia and PEI resoundingly defeated a motion upholding the traditional Anglican and Biblical position on marriage. The bishop then stated that this vote simply reflected the desire to not take a stand but continue the “listening process”.

AEN parishioner to lead prayer conference in Stayner, ON, June 19-20

Good Shepherd (Stayner, ON), an Anglican Church of Canada parish, is hosting a prayer conference that promises to be very worthwhile. The conference will be led by Jane Jones, who is the National Prayer Coordinator for Anglican Renewal Ministries (ARM) and a parishioner at AEN parish St Peter’s (Okotoks). Full details are available on the church website.

Church of Melanesia installs new primate

The Anglican Church of Melanesia – which encompasses Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia – installed the Rt Rev David Vunagi as the new Archbishop.

Church in Sri Lanka appeals for aid

The Bishop of Kurungala describes the desperate and deplorable situation of thousands left wounded or destitute by the civil war in northern Sri Lanka– and appeals for urgent aid. He says, “The injured are now being evacuated to hospitals across the country… to try to share the burden and deliver the necessary emergency treatment… Resources here are now stretched beyond capacity. There are severe shortages of medicines, particularly pain relief and antibiotics, a lack of staff, beds and mosquito nets and not enough food or clean drinking water. The evacuees arriving are in need not only of medical care. They have been forced to leave everything behind, are separated from their families and have no clothing, money or belongings.”

New Catholic Archbishop becoming voice of Christianity in England

Newly appointed Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, is impressing some as the emerging voice of Christianity in that nation. Commenting on a recent speech, a Telegraph report calls it, “Well-argued, passionate, and theological”. It says, “He is at ease with the press, understands the power of the media, understands he needs to get journalists on side and wants to be proactive rather than reactive. It marks a whole new way of doing things in the ecclesiastical world that has so rarely been willing to raise its head above the pulpit… In the Church of England, Rowan Williams’s public comments have become less frequent and when he does speak out… he finds himself being shot down. Apart from John Sentamu, the Church will be bereft of anyone willing or able to capture the public imagination, particularly with the imminent departure of Michael Nazir-Ali… The Catholic Church could well find that with [Nichols] as Archbishop of Westminster it will become the main Christian voice in this country.

More questions about the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) meeting

The Anglican Communion Institute has posted several analyses of the transcripts of the recent ACC meeting in Jamaica and concludes that the majority of ACC members likely intended to approve the full Covenant and that the critical motion to open a part of the Covenant to further discussion and revision was actually never passed. They say that their analysis raises “significant questions about the way the votes at ACC-14 were interpreted by ACC officials”.

In an article in the Telegraph, Bishop Nazir-Ali (Rochester) speaks to the political issues of the day from a thoroughly Christian perspective. He identifies the root of the problem and says, “What is needed is moral and spiritual renewal… We need a robust moral framework for our life together. In this country, the Judaeo-Christian tradition has provided the basis for the institutions of state, the laws of the land and the values by which we live. It has also given rise to a sense of mutual obligation which has characterised British society at its best… Once, responsibility, trust, truth-telling and hard work characterised what was best about us… We should reaffirm a Christian basis for society and the need for a common framework for our life together.”

Worth reading

In “Our own worst media enemies”, Professor John Stackhouse scolds Christians, especially clergy for treating journalists shabbily. He says:

Journalists rarely come to us when we think we have a story – although most of them are glad for us to suggest ideas. They come to us when they think they have a story already. And Christmas and Easter are still occasions in Canada for Christian stories to be told.

I don’t understand why pastors who pride themselves on being able to preach well to seekers can’t speak well to journalists. I particularly don’t understand why churches anxious to connect with their communities at Christmas and Easter won’t make it a high priority to connect with the mass media of those communities.

So get ready.

And, please, answer the phone.

The Rev Canon Dr Chris Sugden has written a good overview/summary of the “state of play” in the Communion. He outlines how, while the Communion is coming apart, the orthodox – Evangelical, Charismatic and Anglo-Catholic – are coming together as witnessed by events and developments in the UK, North America and internationally. He says, “Those who hold the levers of power are offering further delay and prolonged discussion… The Archbishop of Canterbury expects…“that the Communion shifts towards an agglomeration of more strongly bonded and less strongly bonded Provinces or constituent parts” in which the less strongly bonded Provinces are still part of the instruments of unity. The GAFCON Provinces will form the heart of the strongly bonded parts. As 80% of the Communion they are already bonded as such in the Primates Council.”

Mark Tooley, president of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, writes that mainline protestant churches will not inevitably fall under the sway of liberalism and cites the failure of liberalism to carry the day in a number of recent denominational conventions.

Two wrongs don’t make a right

The recent murder of a high-profile abortionist – specializing in late-term abortions – has raised the profile of abortion in the media and given opportunity for pro-abortionists to negatively portray the prolife movement. A commentary in LifeSiteNews decries the murder and provides prolife advocates with facts to counter to hysteria. The writer says, “Let’s not be bullied or silenced by those who are trying to tar the whole pro-life movement by cynically exploiting the murder of George Tiller. Let’s instead reply with facts which add context to the “abortionists are heroes, pro-lifers are violent” narrative that the “mainstream” media seems too willing to parrot.”

Meanwhile, the new dean of Episcopal Divinity School has called the murdered abortionist a “martyr” and a “saint” and added ““He was a deeply spiritual, prayerful man.”

Interesting reading

Andrew Carey, writing, in the Church of England Newspaper expresses his astonishment at the extremist tactics liberals in the Church of England use in an attempt to stamp out the orthodox. He marvels that liberal activists and positions that were considered extremist just a decade ago are now very mainstream. “While views which were absolutely mainstream only a decade ago about marriage and sexuality, are now regarded as homophobic heresies… And impatient with their slow rate of progress in winning the theological argument on human sexuality in the Church of England, liberal Anglicans resort instead to placing facts on the ground, and ultimately imposing change through Parliament and the courts on the Church of England, bypassing Synods and proper theological decision-making.” He concludes: “The loss of significant numbers of evangelicals in the Church of England would lead to the bankruptcy of dioceses and the large-scale closure of churches. The fact is that in pressing for victory, liberals are making an unholy gamble because they are likely to lose it all.”

Robert Gagnon, PhD addresses the illogic of the “hate crimes” legislation recently passed by the US House of Representatives, calling it “an Orwellian thought-crimes bill” and a “a hate-promotion bill” – against those who disagree with unbiblical sexual behaviour.

Colin Campbell, PhD – a St Hilda’s (Oakville, ON) parishioner – discusses two extremes of error we can fall into – either discounting Scripture and embracing “new revelation”, or embracing Scripture without evidencing the fruit of the Spirit.

Please pray…

For the legal cases

For the Vancouver court case – especially the legal team and for Mr Justice Stephen Kelleher. May God grant grace, insight and discernment beyond their own.

For the Windsor case (involving St Aidan’s) which is being dealt with in London

For the congregations involved in court proceedings and disputes. Pray for peace particularly for the wardens and trustees who are on the front lines and bear the burden of responsibility. Pray for a continued focus on, and blessing upon, their ministry in the midst of this turmoil.

For the judges hearing these cases throughout Canada, but particularly in Hamilton, London and Vancouver – as well as ANiC’s lawyers representing our parishes.

For generous contributions to the Legal Defence Fund so that legal costs can be covered and the churchwardens and trustees are not at personal financial risk.

For the leaders and parishioners of the dioceses pursuing eviction of and damages against ANiC congregations and wardens in court.

For the Anglican Church in North America provincial assembly, June 22-25 – and particularly for ANiC delegates and leaders as they prepare.

For new ANiC congregations, church plants and projects – especially for Emmaus Church (Montreal) and for the Toronto Centre ANiC project meeting (June 10). May they know the Lord’s leading and experience His blessing on their congregations.

For those suffering in Sri Lanka as a result of the civil war and for those ministering to them.

And now a word from our sponsor

But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison… And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them. But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men…. [I]n the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
